Investment casting is a manufacturing process in which a wax pattern is coated with a refractory material. The pattern is then heated to melt the wax, leaving behind an empty cavity in the shape of the desired part. Molten metal is then poured into this cavity and allowed to cool and solidify. Once cooled, the ceramic shell surrounding the newly formed metal part can be broken off, leaving behind a near-net-shape cast component that only requires minimal finishing operations.
